More than 25 years since the discovery of modular protein binding domains, we now appreciate their critical role in the function and evolution of cell signalling networks. Modularity is a recurrent theme in signalling, operating across multiple scales, and understanding modular design principles is essential for the rational manipulation of signalling to improve human health. The 2016 EMBO Workshop on the Modularity in Signalling Proteins and Networks will focus on cutting-edge work in protein and network engineering, systems and synthetic biology, and in translating insights from signalling networks into novel therapeutic strategies.
