3D printers are machines able to realize a three-dimensional model by means of an additive manufacturing process; so an object which is drawn through a software is replicated in the real world with the aid of suitable materials. It does not create surface, but volume.

These new technologies show a great development in different fields and have been put at the service of medicine to improve every aspect of human life. These new biotechnologies allow three-dimensional printing of organs and tissues which are then used in the planning of interventions, in education and, last but not least, in the custom-made prosthesis design that are implanted in place of the human body tissues or designing systems that act as a support or exoskeleton. The purpose of the event, aimed at high school (2nd degree) and university students, is to introduce young people to biotechnology and show its many uses in the medical field. In addition, it will be demonstrated as such technologies help the surgeon to prepare for a procedure using a three-dimensional physical model of the printed generated organs and tissues, in order to improve scheduling, reduce time, gain efficiency and improve the relationship with the patient by taking part in the process. It will also be shown how it is possible to apply such technology in cases of surgery on bones or soft tissues.
